How To Value Your Time

I hope you are doing well, I know we haven’t connected by newsletter in a couple weeks. In fact, a client who is also a part of our YMJA Community observed that she thought I had unsubscribed her from our newsletter mailing list. If you began to think like that too, perish-the-thought. I have been thinking of you. Truth is, the Month of April has been challenging, with three car accidents, personal sickness, family sickness, and I just learned today that someone I met last week Saturday, died violently last night. April has been no joke, but I am coaching myself through it to clarity, sanity and serenity, and I am grateful to God for life and the grace to work through the challenges with a keen sense of hope.

This leads me to the subject of this post, I’d like to share with you today. I often advise my clients, as well as the young college students and graduates I also serve, “Live life with…urgency…not anxiety.” I am confident that you know all the clichés about the importance of time, and why we should value it and how short life is, etc. Yet you may still struggle with Read the Rest…

Why You Need Moments of Reflection

Perhaps you know that today is Ash Wednesday  a day of religious significance to the Christian Community across the world. At heart, it begins a 40 day period of intentional reflection about life, and about one’s own life and purpose.
I don’t know what kind of day you are having as we pause mid-week, or what kind of season that you find yourself in, as we approach the end of the first quarter of New Year 2017, given that today is the 1st of March…already [smile].
But I do hope that you have check points in your week, month or at least year, where you spend intentional time reflecting on Life and the meaning and purpose of your own life. The pace of life is very very “crazy-making” and you may respond “How does Cheryll expect me to find time to r e f l e c t. I can barely keep up with the current demands of my life, and all the commitments, and expectations that the significant people/organizations in my life have of me, not to mention the various non-negotiable deadlines I have to meet?” “I don’t need reflection. I need rest!”

What a Trip To The ER Taught Me About Clarity

So, here’s my story. While I lived in the USA in the 90s for college and then work, I came to know a woman, who I’ll call Sharon. We met at Church. We attended the same Adult Sunday School class and would chit chat by phone occasionally. Sharon was gregarious, welcoming, just the sweetest kind of temperament. She was the type of person you’d feel guilty not liking. One day I got a call from Sharon. Her tone was very unlike what I was accustomed to. She was extremely distressed. Alarmed. Scared. She was suffering from a serious anxiety attack and felt like she just couldn’t go on. Unknown to me, she had been on medication for anxiety for a long time. We agreed that I would accompany her to the hospital. I got in my car and headed to her apartment and we went on to the nearest hospital and sat in the Emergency Room waiting. If You Can’t Go Over or Under, Go Around

If you can’t go over or under, go round.”

To reach your goal this advice is sound:

It Couldn’t Be Done

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That ‘maybe it couldn’t,’ but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing

What if You Are The Weakest Link?

So you’ve finally and decisively (hopefully) made up your mind and now your goal is clear. But did you know that no matter how good you are at what you have set out to do, your performance will most likely be sub-optimal?  The Theory of Constraints, developed by Dr. Eli Godratt (1984) attempts to explain this for us. Essentially Dr. Godratt is saying what we’ve heard from youth, “A chain is as strong as its weakest link.” When a business or an individual sets out to accomplish a goal, they will be hampered by constraints.

Constraints in an organization can relate to people, supplies, information, equipment, or policies. They can be tangible and intangible (e.g. organizational culture) and can also be internal or external to an organization. Constraints on a personal level can involve skills, knowledge, attitudes, people,  finances, tools/equipment, environment (e.g. domestic, geographical, national, global). As in organizations, personal  constraints can be tangible or intangible, and internal or external.

If we look at constraints as related to weaknesses or vulnerabilities, then there may be several such factors relevant to your particular goal. However, in the Theory of Constraints, there can only be one (1) constraint at a time. The weakest link. The factor that causes the…greatest… vulnerability or threat to the achievement of your goal.  It is instructive to understand and remember ,that it is the weakest link that sets the pace of your progress towards achieving your goal.

Therefore your goal setting activity must include up front, the identification of  your constraints, and careful judgment on your part of which of them represents your weakest link. If you wish to increase the likelihood of achieving your goal, then once the constraint is identified, you must manage it. That means take action to completely eliminate it, if that is possible, or manage it well. After you have implemented your strategy to manage your constraint, you should do an evaluation to determine whether your progress towards your goal has improved. If not, then adjust your strategy and evaluate again, and repeat until the constraint is effectively managed. If yes, you can expect your progress will speed up. It is now time to determine what is the next weakest link and take action to manage that and so on.

It is very likely that , many persons have aborted, and still-born goals in their personal history. This is not because the goal was intrinsically nigh impossible. This is not because they themselves were no match for the goal. It may simply be a case of setting a worthy goal, becoming distracted and enamoured with the idea of accomplishing the goal, and embracing the positive changes that it will bring, without doing the hard work of considering the disabling factors within and externally, which may get in the way. Then reality strikes at the most inconvenient time and they lose their self-confidence, and energy, towards their vision for their lives, and self-doubt , fear and hesitation increases.

Goals are there to help us keep focus on and bring into our lives the things we value most.  Yet the process of setting goals must be done properly if we are to achieve them and develop our lives in the way we desire and deserve. Have you aborted a goal because you were hi-jacked by a constraint you didn’t  pay early attention to? Did you miscalculate which constraint represented your weakest link? Remember the constraint can be internal or external. Interestingly, some experts argue based on the Pareto Principle that most of our constraints are internal. How does this apply to you and your habit of setting or not setting goals? Do you cultivate a mindset of limiting beliefs? Do you suffer from procrastination or indecisiveness? Do you typically jump into things without careful analysis and reflection? Do you properly plan concerning others but poorly plan for yourself? Do you avoid asking for help from family, friends, experts, colleagues?

You owe it to yourself to live your life fully. You can do this by examining what’s holding you back in any or  every area of your life, and begin crafting a plan, then taking action to eliminate the constraint, even if you discover that it is you who are standing in your own way.

End of Year Reflections for the Career Minded

How Did I Do This Year-

Today I had the tremendous pleasure of being  guest career expert on the At Your Service, Job Centre segment of  Nationwide News Network (Nationwide News 90FM). I was discussing with co-hosts Vernon Darby & Kristen Williams, questions that professionals can use for their evaluation of the past year. This with a view to identifying gaps to be addressed, as well as what worked very well, and which could be maintained, in order to have an even better New Year.  Below I share my speaking notes. There is also a handout you may download to help your personal reflections. Hope you find this information helpful.

 

SUGGESTED APPROACH

  • For each question give yourself a rating out of 10, with 1 being the lowest satisfaction rating and 10 being your highest satisfaction rating.
  • For the questions that you rated as 10/10, analyze and write down what contributed to making your life work well in this area. Commit to keep doing more of those strategies in 2016
  • For the questions that you don’t give a 10/10 satisfaction rating, analyze and write down what went well and what was missing in your experience that prevented you from having full satisfaction.
  • Brainstorm what one (1) action you can take to improve your score at least by 1 point.
  • Create a goal with a deadline to address the gaps you identified
  • Take action
  • Overall, note what you are especially proud of over the past year and find a way to acknowledge and honour yourself by celebrating in a small or big way with an activity that makes you happy.
  • Note who &/or what you need to let go of and release to live a more happy and productive life in the New Year.
  • Take action

 

REFLECTION QUESTIONS 

  1. How well did I remain connected to my values in the significant areas of my life? [ / 10]

Values are our deeply held beliefs with regard to how things should be in the various significant areas of our lives (i.e. Self, Family, Love Relationships, Career, Finances, God, Friendship, Fun & Leisure). It is our Why we do what we do. When our values are violated, or we make choices that are contrary to our values, it negatively impacts our emotions, increases our sense of being stressed, and may affect our self-worth and self-confidence.

  1. What is the overall state of my health, physical and mental? [ / 10]

We live in an increasingly stressful and fear-filled world, with daily personal problems, as well as financial challenges from an ongoing global recession. There are daily reports of job losses, disease epidemics, natural disasters, crime, violence, wars and terrorist attacks. Persons with good health are better able to withstand stressors than persons who have known or unknown health problems.  In order to maintain good health, our body needs consistent  good nutrition, adequate rest, adequate exercise, and fun & relaxation activities.

  1. What is the quality of my personal relationships and professional relationships? [ / 10]

There is strength in numbers.  When we operate alone, life can be burdensome. It is important to have relationships with safe people both among family & friends, as well as professionally.  Safe people are those persons who live with integrity, speak the truth to you with goodwill and who challenge you to build you up and not tear you down.

Good interpersonal skills will increase our likability and influence with the people in our personal and professional environments.  When we are in frequent conflict with our family and friends, it negatively affects our emotions, and impacts our professional relationships and performance.

The more people we know and enjoy good relationships with and who share our common interests, the more quality information that we receive about opportunities that will enhance our lives. Which is why professional networking is so important for the professional who wants to increase employability and competitiveness within his/her industry and job market.

  1. What value did I add to my [current / last] company? [  / 10]

Whether currently employed or job hunting, it is important to know the significance of your job within the organizational structure of your current/last company, and also to be able to quantify your overall contribution to your department, unit, and organization. Your ability to quantify your contribution, boosts your self-confidence, helps you negotiate for increased benefits, improves the value and magnetism of your resume, and helps you express yourself confidently in interviews when pursuing  other job or scholarship opportunities.

  1. What is my resilience against job loss? [ / 10]

Generally if you have a job you can lose a job. However with the current state of the local and global economy, more professionals are at greater risk of job loss. You should accept this upfront and take action from now to

  • Curtail spending and establish an emergency fund of 6 – 12 months of monthly income to cushion you, in case you have to suddenly job hunt
  • Keep updated with industry and labour market news, and analyze the job-outlook for your particular job or industry. Is it poised for growth or will it slow down?
  • Acquire any skills that will keep you competitive in your profession &/or industry as well as in an alternative profession, so that you increase your job hunting options
  • Determine how the market is responding to your resume

 or if already unemployed or you desire to switch jobs or careers for improved income

How robust is my job search strategy (online, offline, social media use, strong network)?

Beyond responding to advertisements in print and online as a traditional job search method, how well are you  incorporating

  • Social Media – Mastering the top social media platforms that support job hunting and professional development? Creating a professional profile online which enables recruiters to research you and form a positive impression of how well you will fit their company’s culture? Joining groups online and participating by sharing original content and liking and commenting and asking questions of other group members consistently so that persons get a feel of you and feel connected to you over time?
  • Networking – strategically going through your list of contacts, sharing with them your job search objectives and intentionally asking them if they know of any opportunities, and if they would be comfortable submitting a resume on your behalf?
  • Identifying alternative forms of employment e.g. Small business ventures or freelance work online or offline?
  • Preparing well crafted, error free versions of your resume which target the specific job you are applying for [Not a one-size-fits-all resume], and which highlights your achievements instead of your tasks.
  • Knowledge of a variety of types of interview questions and being prepared to give impactful answers
  • Strategies to keep yourself motivated and upbeat throughout your job hunting period and prevent discouragement and depression in the event that your job hunt goes longer than you hoped (e.g. reading for personal & professional development, volunteering, exercising, enjoyable activities with low budget)?

 

SUMMARY

  • Ask yourself the questions, give yourself a satisfaction rating, and note your answers on what went well and what you need to improve in each area
  • Note what you are most proud of and celebrate
  • Note what you need to work on and create an action plan
  • Note who &/or what you need to let go of and release
  • Take action
  • Be committed to paying the price to have a better life and work experience in 2016

5 Ways to Improve Your Relationships

From time to time you may encounter someone in your family system, workplace, religious context, school, or business etc. that you don’t get along with, and for good reasons. However,  based on who the person is, you may not have the freedom to terminate your connection or avoid the person. Instead of feeling trapped, fearful, anxious, or angry, take action to improve your relationship. Here are some tips that I have used personally and found to be quite helpful.

  • Be Self-aware – All of us have ‘a way’ about us that people respond to, some warmly, and some with irritation. Become aware of how you impact others and adjust as necessary.
  • Don’t Take Things Personally – Although people often intend things to be personally offensive as part of their carelessness and power play in interpersonal exchanges, learning how to refrain from taking things personally, ensures that you will not be controlled by others. You can even laugh and be genuinely lighthearted in situations that would typically provoke vexation. This effectively eliminates the typical breaks in relationships and cooling of friendships brought on by negative emotions. Keep your stride.
  • Balance Togetherness with Separateness – Don’t always be available or predictable. Generally speaking, we humans place higher value on things in short supply.
  • Affirm Others – Here are 4 messages that warm the heart. Physical – I like to look at you; Mental – I think you are intelligent; Social – I like your company and Competence – I think you do that well. No matter how objectionable someone is, at least one of these messages will apply to them. Be mature. You-have-it-within-you hard as it may be, and as undeserving as the other person(s) may be. Still, challenge yourself and freely affirm others with as many of these messages as you can. Use your own words and style to convey these messages. Trust me–they work and Yes, over time, they ‘put-down-the-gun.’
  • Apologize & Clean Up When You Make a Mess – Didn’t we learn this in kindergarten? Each time your actions cause hurt, harm or setbacks for someone, and you are made aware of it, offer a simple “I’m sorry” with no qualifiers, and ask how you can make things better, then take swift action on what you can do to restore normalcy in the situation.

While we may not need a specific person, we do need people. Therefore, becoming life-long learners on improving our people skills and by extension our relationships with others, has a direct impact on our quality of life and our overall sense of well-being.
