How to Make This YOUR Year

  1. Personally accept that YOU can have the best year of your life to date, this very year. Without this core belief, you show up in your life as a victim, someone to whom things happen, not someone who makes [good] things happen for your own self.
  2. Become clear about what you want in the significant areas of your life e.g. Self, Family, Love Relationship, Friendships, Career, Finances, Health, Spiritual, Fun & Enjoyment. Decide WHAT is important in the area and WHY it is important to you. Write down how life would be better if that goal was accomplished and your current reality.
  3. Select the most important area of your life to start acting on. That would be the area which if corrected today would have the greatest positive impact on you overall.
  4. Identify your constraints. Be honest with yourself about what holds you back from doing the things you need to do for your life, or doing them on time. Eliminating your constraints or managing them will greatly boost every effort you make in investing in the quality life you desire and deserve, this year.
  5. Remind yourself daily/weekly of what this year means to you, and why. Many times we do not have what we need or want, because we lose sight of what we truly want.
Personal/Professional Development Planning

I use a tool called the Wheel of Life with my clients. It helps you to rate the significant areas of your life and give yourself a score for the level of satisfaction you are currently experiencing in each area of your life. It is an effective personal/professional development exercise that will give you snap shot about how you are feeling about the various areas of your life, and how you are feeling about one area in relation to the other areas. The Wheel of Life is quite useful at this time of year, especially with most of the year ahead of you.

Why is this helpful? Once you give yourself clear feedback on how you are feeling about your life right now, you have the basis of deciding what you need to work on to create the quality of life you wish for yourself.

If You Can’t Go Over or Under, Go Around

A baby mole got to feeling big,
And wanted to show how he could dig;
So he plowed along in the soft, warm dirt
Till he hit something hard, and it surely hurt!

A dozen stars flew out of his snout;
He sat on his haunches, began to pout;
Then rammed the thing again with his head–
His grandpap picked him up half dead.

“Young man,” he said, “though your pate is bone.
You can’t butt your way through solid stone.
This bit of advice is good, I’ve found:
If you can’t go over or under, go round.”

A traveler came to a stream one day,
And because it presumed to cross his way,
And wouldn’t turn round to suit his whim
And change its course to go with him,

His anger rose far more than it should,
And he vowed he’d cross right where he stood.
A man said there was a bridge below,
But not a step would he budge or go.

The current was swift and the bank was steep,
But he jumped right in with a violent leap.
A fisherman dragged him out half-drowned:
“When you can’t go over or under, go round.”

If you come to a place that you can’t get _through,_
Or _over_ or _under_, the thing to do
Is to find a way _round_ the impassable wall,
Not say you’ll go YOUR way or not at all.

You can always get to the place you’re going,
If you’ll set your sails as the wind is blowing.
If the mountains are high, go round the valley;
If the streets are blocked, go up some alley;

If the parlor-car’s filled, don’t scorn a freight;
If the front door’s closed, go in the side gate.
To reach your goal this advice is sound:
If you can’t go over or under, go round.

Making a Decision You Can Live With

Think on paper and note the pros and cons 
Documenting on paper, helps you relieve stress from a mind filled with burdensome thoughts, and it allows you to take a break and come back and review the relevant details and discuss it with others, if you so choose.

Brainstorm options without judgement
Brainstorming engages your creative, solution oriented energy. In addition, think of someone who is completely unlike you and generate options according to their way of thinking. Thinking like someone completely different from you enables you to have a more detailed view of the situation and generate much more options than you will generate limited by your own mindset and worldview.

Honestly Identify your biases
Biases increase your blind spotS, which if not confronted will set you up for failure.

Consider who and/or what will be impacted by your decision
You live in community, consequently, everything you do will have an impact on the people you interact with regularly, especially your most significant (e.g. family, co-workers, friends) relationships.

Identify the human, methods, financial, material,  and timeline elements required to  make and implement the decision
This man-method-money-material-timeline framework enables you to see  more clearly all the elements to be considered in the decision making process.

Ensure your decision aligns with your core values
Your values serve as your temperature gauge to indicate whether you are heading in the right direction. To live separated from your values is to live without peace.

Make your decision!

What if You Are The Weakest Link?

The Power to Change Beliefs
So you’ve finally and decisively (hopefully) made up your mind and now your goal is clear. But did you know that no matter how good you are at what you have set out to do, your performance will most likely be sub-optimal?  The Theory of Constraints, developed by Dr. Eli Godratt (1984) attempts to explain this for us. Essentially Dr. Godratt is saying what we’ve heard from youth, “A chain is as strong as its weakest link.” When a business or an individual sets out to accomplish a goal, they will be hampered by constraints.

Constraints in an organization can relate to people, supplies, information, equipment, or policies. They can be tangible and intangible (e.g. organizational culture) and can also be internal or external to an organization. Constraints on a personal level can involve skills, knowledge, attitudes, people,  finances, tools/equipment, environment (e.g. domestic, geographical, national, global). As in organizations, personal  constraints can be tangible or intangible, and internal or external.

If we look at constraints as related to weaknesses or vulnerabilities, then there may be several such factors relevant to your particular goal. However, in the Theory of Constraints, there can only be one (1) constraint at a time. The weakest link. The factor that causes the…greatest… vulnerability or threat to the achievement of your goal.  It is instructive to understand and remember ,that it is the weakest link that sets the pace of your progress towards achieving your goal.

Therefore your goal setting activity must include up front, the identification of  your constraints, and careful judgment on your part of which of them represents your weakest link. If you wish to increase the likelihood of achieving your goal, then once the constraint is identified, you must manage it. That means take action to completely eliminate it, if that is possible, or manage it well. After you have implemented your strategy to manage your constraint, you should do an evaluation to determine whether your progress towards your goal has improved. If not, then adjust your strategy and evaluate again, and repeat until the constraint is effectively managed. If yes, you can expect your progress will speed up. It is now time to determine what is the next weakest link and take action to manage that and so on.

It is very likely that , many persons have aborted, and still-born goals in their personal history. This is not because the goal was intrinsically nigh impossible. This is not because they themselves were no match for the goal. It may simply be a case of setting a worthy goal, becoming distracted and enamoured with the idea of accomplishing the goal, and embracing the positive changes that it will bring, without doing the hard work of considering the disabling factors within and externally, which may get in the way. Then reality strikes at the most inconvenient time and they lose their self-confidence, and energy, towards their vision for their lives, and self-doubt , fear and hesitation increases.

Goals are there to help us keep focus on and bring into our lives the things we value most.  Yet the process of setting goals must be done properly if we are to achieve them and develop our lives in the way we desire and deserve. Have you aborted a goal because you were hi-jacked by a constraint you didn’t  pay early attention to? Did you miscalculate which constraint represented your weakest link? Remember the constraint can be internal or external. Interestingly, some experts argue based on the Pareto Principle that most of our constraints are internal. How does this apply to you and your habit of setting or not setting goals? Do you cultivate a mindset of limiting beliefs? Do you suffer from procrastination or indecisiveness? Do you typically jump into things without careful analysis and reflection? Do you properly plan concerning others but poorly plan for yourself? Do you avoid asking for help from family, friends, experts, colleagues?

You owe it to yourself to live your life fully. You can do this by examining what’s holding you back in any or  every area of your life, and begin crafting a plan, then taking action to eliminate the constraint, even if you discover that it is you who are standing in your own way.

1st Monday Motivation!

YOU ARE MORE THAN YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES!

So start off this first full week of 2015…oops… 2016 (smile) unreserved and unapologetic about what you want to accomplish. Be that person who tries – corrects – keeps going. You will achieve your desired goals.

BTW, I hope you’ve written down your goals for this year already or will do it soon. Goals don’t belong in your head. They need to be documented, just like all the other valuable matters in your life are in tangible form.

 

1 Goals For 2016

 

Your goals should have a due date with a supporting plan with action steps that you pursue daily, weekly, monthly as relevant. Review your goals and progress weekly or monthly so they remain foremost in your mind.

Many times we don’t get what we want because we just don’t remember. Why? There’s just too much going on and we get distracted. It’s understandable.

So do what you need to do to remind yourself weekly…what 2016 MUST be about for YOU.

Are You Somebody?

Other side of fear (1)

TODAY,  Saturday 31st October is Day #304 of 2015. After today, there are 61 days remaining in this year. For some of us this news is s-o-b-e-r-i-n-g. For others, its exciting and celebratory. Still for all of us, it is 61-days-of-blessed-OPPORTUNITY. What will we make of it? What fears are we willing to face up to in order to make the best use of this gift call Life, and the remaining 61 days of this year? What trivial pursuits are we willing to set aside?  What self-defeating attitudes are we willing to finally learn how to bring into subjection and render powerless?  Why? So we can proudly redeem the time, and revel in a year which finds us finishing s-t-r-o-n-g and gratified in our core that bellows Yes! I Did It! and Yes! My Life in 2015 Was Well Worth Living!?

Lot’s of questions huh? Well I have one more  question for you, which I will come back to. First though,  I want to share with you this poem I was drawn to recently. Its graduation time and I was looking for a poem to inspire graduates and I found “It Couldn’t Be Done!” by Edgar Albert Guest. I’d never heard of it and I thought it was perfect. And so I thought it worth sharing with you too.

It Couldn’t Be Done

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That ‘maybe it couldn’t,’ but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

Somebody scoffed: ‘Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it; ‘
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure,
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That ‘cannot be done,’ and you’ll do it.

Sticking With it Till the End

ICould-Would-Did went to college for the first time 3 years later than my high-school cohort, because I didn’t pass my A’ level exams (a UK and  Caribbean school leaving assessment) which would have gotten me straight into University.  My parents couldn’t  have easily afforded for me to repeat the final year of high school and re-sit those exams. I didn’t want to burden them, and in any case, I was ready to see the back of high school. So I went to work. I eventually got my first degree 10 years after I graduated high school.  That would include stops-and-starts and periods of grave and fearful uncertainty. This meant that I completed college 7 years after my schoolmates who went straight to university after high school. Well today I have two degrees including a Masters; got accepted to two doctoral programs, which I didn’t pursue.  I am a middle manager in a leading university in the Caribbean and owner of my own Personal & Professional Development company, You in Mind Jamaica. The latter, being quite an unexpected but pleasant and truly rewarding change in career direction. None of this would have been true if I had given up my professional dreams when I failed those exams at the end of high school, or if I had given up when I had to stop college for two years during my first degree, with no guarantee of completion.

Staying Motivated

How do you stay motivated? What is the lubricant that keeps you moving from point A to B to C and on and on, no matter what, no matter how long it takes, until what you want to see happen, does? Which of the theories of motivation do you identify with? Perhaps motivation is instinctive for you, seemingly ingrained.  You don’t need to think about it much, it is just a part of you, to decide, then take action until done. How about  the role of rewards? Maybe you get things done most easily when you can see the benefit to you in achieving the goal. Perhaps you feel inspired to get things done when you feel out-of-balance in an area of your life, and that makes you uncomfortable and then drives you to do something about it until you regain your sense of balance and wellbeing. Alternatively, you may be cognitive in your approach to motivation. You believe life should have a certain order and hierarchy to it. You start by taking care of  the basics, and then you move to the next level of achievement until you reach your ultimate goal.

You are in a good place in life if you have a system that works for you to keep pulling you forward from the moment you identify and decide on what you want, through to achieving it. By contrast, so many people struggle with staying motivated and committed to completing their goals. That includes the struggle to figure out what they want in the first place, in order to define a goal worthy of their commitment and effort.

When Motivation is a Struggle

If that struggle describes you, here is what I suggest. Focus on self-knowledge. Try to get to know yourself in a data oriented way. By that I mean pull it out of your head and write it out. So get a dedicated notepad, physical or virtual. Once you get it written, this allows you to review it, and reflect on it, and prioritize it, and discuss it with others with a solution-oriented mindset versus having it swimming around in your head. In your head your thoughts have no avenue for expression. They soon bottleneck, jam-up and create a great weight which just saps your energy. Very anti-motivational, don’t you agree? As you begin to think seriously about YOU, ask yourself these questions and write out your responses.

Thoughts

  • What do I think about most often?
  • Where does my imagination take me most often?
  • What topics do I gravitate to in the news media, in books, in magazines, at online sites I frequent, for online searches I conduct?
  • What do I chat about the most with family, friends, colleagues?

Emotions

  • What makes me happy at home, at work, in my religious setting, in my neighbourhood, in my country, across the world?
  • What makes me sad at home, at work, in my religious setting, in my neighbourhood, in my country,  across the world?

Actions

  • What are my  current weekly activities?
  • What do you I enjoy doing?
  • What do I dislike doing?
  • If I was in charge and had all the resources (financial, emotional, material, human) I needed, what would I ensure was available/in place, at home, at work, in my religious setting, in my neighbourhood, in my country,  across the world?

 

Don’t do this exercise in one sitting, spread it out over a week, taking a section at a time and giving it careful thought.  This is a brainstorm, and so do not judge your answers. Just write down what comes up, and get it all out. Once you’ve answered all the sections, review what you have written and make a list of  any common themes that you identify across the categories of your Thoughts, Emotions, and Actions.  Once you have your short-list of common themes, for each item in your short-list, write the answer to “Why is this important to me?” This will help you to see more clearly what (your goals) truly matters to you in life and why (your values). Knowing what you want and why you want it, is key to you staying-in-action regardless of challenges, disappointments and setbacks and achieving your goals.
