How To Value Your Time

Time

I hope you are doing well, I know we haven’t connected by newsletter in a couple weeks. In fact, a client who is also a part of our YMJA Community observed that she thought I had unsubscribed her from our newsletter mailing list. If you began to think like that too, perish-the-thought. I have been thinking of you. Truth is, the Month of April has been challenging, with three car accidents, personal sickness, family sickness, and I just learned today that someone I met last week Saturday, died violently last night. April has been no joke, but I am coaching myself through it to clarity, sanity and serenity, and I am grateful to God for life and the grace to work through the challenges with a keen sense of hope.

This leads me to the subject of this post, I’d like to share with you today. I often advise my clients, as well as the young college students and graduates I also serve, “Live life with…urgency…not anxiety.” I am confident that you know all the clichés about the importance of time, and why we should value it and how short life is, etc. Yet you may still struggle with Read the Rest…

Aren’t You Tired of the Excuses-Excuses-Excuses?

NoExcuseLife

Stop Making Excuses
and  You Will Stop Living
a Less Than What You Want Life

The next time you listen to or make an excuse, pause and reflect. For people do…[invest time-money-thought-emotion]…what is important to them. So what gets done in a day is what is important to us. However much of what we consider important…is not. Otherwise we would live with more joy and less regret. Therefore, life is asking us to become more skilful at determining what is truly important for our lives, sooner. Life is also asking us to have the courage to take action on what we…[now] know is important. BEGIN TODAY.

READY TO TAKE ACTION?
Get something to write with. Ask yourself and note the answer to:
“What is one pending item in my life, about which I have been making excuses; however, I know that if it was resolved today I would have a better quality of life and a greater sense of well being?”
Example: I need a salary increase or a second income to restore my financial health.
Next, ask yourself:
“What is one action I can take over the next seven (7) days to address the matter?”

Example:
I can revise my resume in order to begin searching for a new job.
Write a Goal Statement with an appropriate timeline to hold yourself accountable to taking action.

Example:
To improve my financial health, I will begin by revising my resume by Wednesday, March 15th, 2017 in order to facilitate my job search to attract an appropriate salary increase.

HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED?

To hold yourself accountable to taking action and completing your sub-goal (e.g. Revise resume) over the next seven days, towards achieving your main goal (e.g. Find a new job with adequate salary), identify a safe (non-judgmental, responsible, encouraging) person. Ask the person if they would be your success-partner by holding you accountable for completing your goal by the date you set and cheering you on as you take action each week.

I believe in you. I believe that if you make the choice today, life can be different and better for you. What about you, though? Do you believe your life can be different and better than ever?Do hope you will identify at least one (1) action you can take and complete over the next seven (7) days to move forward on the pending matters that keep you from that fulfilled life you know you can have, and definitely deserve. BEGIN TODAY.

One Main Way to Love Yourself More

LoveYouMore

Stop taking things personally! If you more often than not take things personally you are indulging in what psychologists call “Personalization.” Personalization is a cognitive distortion. So what is a cognitive distortion, you may wonder? A firm belief that something is true, when it is not. The problem is that the erroneous belief negatively impacts how we see ourselves, others, and the world in which we live. This in turn influences our poor decision making in the significant areas of our lives. Read the Rest…

The 10 Commandments of People Who Self-Sabotage – What They Say & Why

GotInMyOwnWay

  1. “Nothing I do will make a difference!”
    Belief: I am a victim.
  2. “What will they say?”
    Belief: What family, friends, and people I want to like and accept me think, is more important than what I think or value, especially in relation to my own life.
  3. “I need him [her] in my life.”
    Belief: I cannot be [do it] alone.
  4. “I am going to make her do what she should do for me!”
    Belief: I have enough power and influence to force people to change their behaviour.
  5. “I would have that by now if only…”
    Belief: A good excuse will cover up my lack of action and progress in the significant areas of my life.
  6. “All my life people keep saying this or that about me, but they just don’t understand.”
    Belief: I am not responsible for the negative patterns that show up in my life, it’s my circumstances.
  7. “I’m not as smart or as attractive or as educated or as wealthy or as connected as…”
     Belief:  When I focus on the assets of others I don’t need to admit that I do not like myself or value myself highly or believe in myself enough.
  8. “I could have that, if I really wanted it.”
    Belief: It’s not that I truly can’t do something or I find it difficult, my lack of performance is due to motivation
  9. “I need more time to think about it”
    Belief: I cannot admit that I am afraid.
  10. “I don’t need help, everybody has setbacks in life.”
    Belief: If I ask for help it means that something is seriously wrong with me.

How to Make This YOUR Year

BestYear

  1. Personally accept that YOU can have the best year of your life to date, this very year. Without this core belief, you show up in your life as a victim, someone to whom things happen, not someone who makes [good] things happen for your own self.
  2. Become clear about what you want in the significant areas of your life e.g. Self, Family, Love Relationship, Friendships, Career, Finances, Health, Spiritual, Fun & Enjoyment. Decide WHAT is important in the area and WHY it is important to you. Write down how life would be better if that goal was accomplished and your current reality.
  3. Select the most important area of your life to start acting on. That would be the area which if corrected today would have the greatest positive impact on you overall.
  4. Identify your constraints. Be honest with yourself about what holds you back from doing the things you need to do for your life, or doing them on time. Eliminating your constraints or managing them will greatly boost every effort you make in investing in the quality life you desire and deserve, this year.
  5. Remind yourself daily/weekly of what this year means to you, and why. Many times we do not have what we need or want, because we lose sight of what we truly want.
Personal/Professional Development Planning

I use a tool called the Wheel of Life with my clients. It helps you to rate the significant areas of your life and give yourself a score for the level of satisfaction you are currently experiencing in each area of your life. It is an effective personal/professional development exercise that will give you snap shot about how you are feeling about the various areas of your life, and how you are feeling about one area in relation to the other areas. The Wheel of Life is quite useful at this time of year, especially with most of the year ahead of you.

Why is this helpful? Once you give yourself clear feedback on how you are feeling about your life right now, you have the basis of deciding what you need to work on to create the quality of life you wish for yourself.

Contact me at cheryll@youinmindjamaica.com if you wish to purchase a Wheel of Life Consultation. Clients have the option of a 30 min or 1 hour consultation by phone or internet e.g. Skype. What a Trip To The ER Taught Me About Clarity

clarity-dirt-between-toes

So, here’s my story. While I lived in the USA in the 90s for college and then work, I came to know a woman, who I’ll call Sharon. We met at Church. We attended the same Adult Sunday School class and would chit chat by phone occasionally. Sharon was gregarious, welcoming, just the sweetest kind of temperament. She was the type of person you’d feel guilty not liking. One day I got a call from Sharon. Her tone was very unlike what I was accustomed to. She was extremely distressed. Alarmed. Scared. She was suffering from a serious anxiety attack and felt like she just couldn’t go on. Unknown to me, she had been on medication for anxiety for a long time. We agreed that I would accompany her to the hospital. I got in my car and headed to her apartment and we went on to the nearest hospital and sat in the Emergency Room waiting. Of course, before we sat down we did the patient intake procedure at the nurse’s station. And we waited. And we waited. And we waited. Read the Rest…

What to Do If Things Don’t Go As Planned

forest_work_wood_casework_road

If You Can’t Go Over or Under, Go Around

by Joseph Morris

A baby mole got to feeling big,
And wanted to show how he could dig;
So he plowed along in the soft, warm dirt
Till he hit something hard, and it surely hurt!

A dozen stars flew out of his snout;
He sat on his haunches, began to pout;
Then rammed the thing again with his head–
His grandpap picked him up half dead.

“Young man,” he said, “though your pate is bone.
You can’t butt your way through solid stone.
This bit of advice is good, I’ve found:
If you can’t go over or under, go round.”

A traveler came to a stream one day,
And because it presumed to cross his way,
And wouldn’t turn round to suit his whim
And change its course to go with him,

His anger rose far more than it should,
And he vowed he’d cross right where he stood.
A man said there was a bridge below,
But not a step would he budge or go.

The current was swift and the bank was steep,
But he jumped right in with a violent leap.
A fisherman dragged him out half-drowned:
“When you can’t go over or under, go round.”

If you come to a place that you can’t get _through,_
Or _over_ or _under_, the thing to do
Is to find a way _round_ the impassable wall,
Not say you’ll go YOUR way or not at all.

You can always get to the place you’re going,
If you’ll set your sails as the wind is blowing.
If the mountains are high, go round the valley;
If the streets are blocked, go up some alley;

If the parlor-car’s filled, don’t scorn a freight;
If the front door’s closed, go in the side gate.
To reach your goal this advice is sound:
If you can’t go over or under, go round.

Who Wears The Mask of Fear?

FearNot

It Couldn’t Be Done

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That ‘maybe it couldn’t,’ but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

Somebody scoffed: ‘Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it; ‘
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure,
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That ‘cannot be done,’ and you’ll do it.
Edgar Albert Guest

SOMEBODY said it couldn’t be done.  Now is that somebody YOU?

Making a Decision You Can Live With

Decision Can Live With

Think on paper and note the pros and cons
Documenting on paper, helps you relieve stress from a mind filled with burdensome thoughts, and it allows you to take a break and come back and review the relevant details and discuss it with others, if you so choose.

Brainstorm options without judgement
Brainstorming engages your creative, solution oriented energy. In addition, think of someone who is completely unlike you and generate options according to their way of thinking. Thinking like someone completely different from you enables you to have a more detailed view of the situation and generate much more options than you will generate limited by your own mindset and worldview.

Honestly Identify your biases
Biases increase your blind spotS, which if not confronted will set you up for failure.

Consider who and/or what will be impacted by your decision
You live in community, consequently, everything you do will have an impact on the people you interact with regularly, especially your most significant (e.g. family, co-workers, friends) relationships.

Identify the human, methods, financial, material,  and timeline elements required to  make and implement the decision
This man-method-money-material-timeline framework enables you to see  more clearly all the elements to be considered in the decision making process.

Ensure your decision aligns with your core values
Your values serve as your temperature gauge to indicate whether you are heading in the right direction. To live separated from your values is to live without peace.

Make your decision!
